Health Action in Crises

The occupied Palestinian territory

IRIN/Wissam Nassar

2 JANUARY 2009--The protection from violence of civilians, patients, health facilities and staff and medical supplies is essential during the current Gaza Strip crisis. WHO and the Palestinian Ministry of Health are co-chairing the Health Cluster and working to coordinate essential health responses and the delivery and distribution of medical supplies. Some 390 people are estimated to have been killed since 27 December and 1700 wounded, including 260 children.

Zimbabwe
29 DECEMBER 2008--WHO is leading efforts to coordinate the response activities of multiple partners to Zimbabwe's cholera outbreak, which as of 28 December has seen more than 29 000 people contract the disease and over 1500 die from it. The outbreak is symptomatic of an overall decline in the standards of the country's health sector. An under-resourced and under-staffed health system, combined with inadequate access to safe drinking water and appropriate hygiene, remains the main threats to health.

Cholera persists, with 10 542 cases reported between 1 January and 7 December. Malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory infections are also common among children under five. WHO is strengthening epidemiological data collection in health facilities and examining with NGO partners surveillance on mortality and malnutrition in some health zones.
