Health Action in Crises

The Democratic Republic of the Congo

© WHO/Chris Black

21 NOVEMBER 2008-- WHO supplies, including 15 000 litres of IV fluids, arrived in Goma today that can treat up to 3000 severe cholera cases. A region-wide distribution plan to supply medicines from Goma to multiple locations has been finalized. Cholera cases continue being reported in Goma, but intensive control has stabilized the situation. But the same cannot be said for areas where insecurity is preventing humanitarian access.

Pakistan
13 NOVEMBER 2008 -- The 29 October earthquake in south-western Balochistan Province has killed 166 people and injured more than 350. WHO provided health supplies, including medicines and equipment for trauma injuries, to the zone. The disease early warning system activated in the affected Ziarat and Pishin districts has not detected outbreaks so far. However, cold weather and poor shelter are raising the number of acute respiratory infections.

Yemen
1 NOVEMBER 2008 -- WHO is preparing an appeal to respond to the health needs of those affected by eastern Yemen's devastating floods, which killed at least 180 people, affected 25 000 and destroyed thousands of homes. There have been no disease outbreaks, but the great level of damage, strained health facilities and vast amounts of water raise the risk of health threats such as outbreaks of measles, diarrhoeal diseases, acute respiratory infections, malaria and dengue fever.
