International Day of Persons with Disabilities

3 December 2009

The "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: dignity and justice for all of us" is the theme of the 2008 International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The theme is based on the goal of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities. Around 10% of the world’s population, or 650 million people, live with disabilities.

The general public and decision makers are often unaware of the great number of persons living with disabilities and impairments around the world and the challenges they face. WHO's mission is to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities through national, regional and global efforts and to raise awareness about the magnitude and consequences.

The day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of life.
