Pakistan: rebuilding health services after the earthquake

On 29 October 2008, while thousands slept in their mud brick homes in Pakistan's south-western Baluchistan province, a powerful earthquake struck with devastating force. Roofs toppled and walls and other debris fell onto unsuspecting people asleep.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck northeast of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan. At least 166 people were killed and 357 injured, according to government reports.

Drawing upon the experience of the 2005 earthquake, which killed tens of thousands in the country's mountainous north, WHO and its partners were able to quickly respond to the situation in Baluchistan. This photo story illustrates the collaborative work of aid agencies and the Pakistani authorities to provide urgent and long-term health care to the survivors.
